Racist Whites Use Individualism to Keep Inferiors Down

See regular updates at the bottom of post.

At least according to the Seattle Public Schools. I read about this on Volokh last week but just didn't have time to post. Checking up on the site today revealed a very good debate (as always) transpired at Volokh over the following days. Be sure to check it out.

The school's website definition of racism overtly declares that only whites are racists,

The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites).
that whites are racists, even even while unconscious,

Individual racism can occur at both an unconscious and conscious level,...

Examples include telling a racist joke, using a racial epithet, or believing in the inherent superiority of whites.

and that we white racists are not only magicians, but also time travelers,

Those aspects of society that overtly and covertly attribute value and normality to white people and Whiteness, and devalue, stereotype, and label people of color as “other”, different, less than, or render them invisible. Examples of these norms include defining white skin tones as nude or flesh colored, having a future time orientation, emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology, defining one form of English as standard, and identifying only Whites as great writers or composers.

"emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology"? What short memories. It's only been 20 years since we ended a 50-year Cold War, where tens of thousands died to protect individualism over collectivism. Now we're told that the ideology that is built on 2,000+ years of the greatest philosophical debates in human history, the ideology that cultivated the best that humankind can offer, the ideology that has liberated more people globally than any other, is nothing more than cultural racism.

I'll be checking out Colorado's definition of "racism" soon. Are whites the only racists in Colorado? Stay tuned!

Update I: I checked out the Poudre School District. No mention of "cracker-only" racism here. Ditto with St. Vrain Valley School District; but I wonder how much this program costs (look for update).

Update II: I went through St. Vrain's latest amended budget and have determined that only a person whose full-time job is...well, let's just say that it may be impossible to determine how much the immigrant program costs. What I did find out is:

Revenues allocated for the English Language Proficiency Act--$103,000. Last year $82,000 was budgeted, but they spent $108,540 (pg 22). Their Bilingual policy.

St Vrain got Fed money for adult education and the Migrant grant pass through BOCES which totaled $191,000 (pg 22).

Boy! I'd sure hate to think how much the LA School District gets.

From the General Fund, $1,636,973 went to a program (or group of programs) called Integrated Education & English Language Acquisition.

Employee salaries and benefits (total, fy ending June 30, 2006) for Adult Basic Education was $957,190 (pg 32).

Employee salary and benefits for gifted kids? $146,107.

It costs taxpayers over $1,000 more to educate a kid at Central, Columbine, and Mtn. View Elementary schools than most other elementary schools. In the case of Eagle Crest, the school with the most students, the difference is over $2,000 (pg34). I was unable to find the racial makeup of the individual schools, though this page has district-wide info. Any ideas?

The Community Education Fund (pg 58) gets funding from tuition, donations, and "grants". There is no breakdown of the percentages which each contributes, but the CEF has expenditures of $3,100,000.

Is it too soon to request that we consider "separate but equal"?

UpdateIII: These are all 2004 numbers. Links also display test scores (by race) and drop-out rates.

Central School had 373 students, 35% are English as a Second Language, 39% are Free Lunch. Check out their bilingual website.

Columbine had 380 students, 69% are ELL, 75% are Free Lunch

Mountain View had 297 students, 19% are ELL, 36% are Free Lunch

Eagle Crest, the elementary school with the highest enrollment and the lowest cost per student, had 650 students, 11% have English as a Second Language, 9% of the students are Free Lunch.

I don't know that there is a good way to respond to a charge like this one without becoming emotional. Such charges are without merit, factual basis or demonstrated foundation.

Which means, of course, the news media will report it again and again.

Racism knows no color boundaries. I know people who are non-white who are biggest racists one could ever met, but they are given a pass because of their skin color.

The more I read of the SPS website the more hilarious I thought it was. I still have trouble believing that this is an official public website and not some Onion parody.

The only sad part is that bad and ignorant parents would allow their children to spend eight hours a day and nine months a year, for 12 years, with these racists.

The St. Vrain Valley School District has money for that, but just a few years ago they were financially broke?

Interesting. But it goes to show where their priorities are at, and not at.

When I went through their budget, I determined that the monies allocated to programs for migrants and their families are increasing at a rapid rate.

Amendment 23 and Ref C saved their asses in the short term, but in ten years, most school districts will be broke without significantly higher taxes, or a complete abandonment of student/teacher ratio's.

I love the use of the term unconscious instead of subconscious. Perhaps I am out of the loop because my kids don't attend regular public schools but I don't think those terms are interchangable. Although being an unconscious racist makes about as much sense.

It's outrageous. The site is still up, which I find interesting. There has to be a ton of mail flooding the district.

Like some things in the post-modern playbook, a modicum of truth surrounded by tons of jargon and wacked out examples.

There is some truth to the assertion that the culture and mass media have "attribute(d) value and normality" to "white people and Whiteness" and created a sense of "otherness" to other folks. How many black faces were on TV in the early 70's??? Besides the junkman, the laundry magnate and the skinny Dynomite guy not too many. Do not discount that kind of symbolism.

But that hardly justifies the laundry list of stupidity they bring up. GMAFB, what is "having a future time orientation"??? SOUNDS LIKE BEING ON TIME.....LOL...
"emphasizing individualism as opposed to a more collective ideology"
LOL........that is retarded. What "collective" are they talking about?? The Borg???
"defining one form of English as standard," Ummmm...how about the King's English, has its rules and stuff.

"identifying only Whites as great writers or composers" How do you do that??? I mean, outside of certain classic Roman, Greek, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, texts this whole deal about authorship of works of art is a recent thing. Couple of hundred years ago, it was largely European - that whole Printing Press thing. But this past century, you can not avoid not talking about Black writers and composers. Hello, Jazz???

Is Cervantes white??? Is he Latino?

The debate on Volokh attempts to answer "future time orientation".

You're correct in your criticisms and your point about mass media.

However, I'll go to my grave believing that the pinnacle of liberty and human endeavor was 19th Century liberalism. This was the result of multiple wars and debates by the greatest thinkers in World history. Though applicable to all people, the final debate, and the majority before, were made by White people.

I've never heard of a Mexican Magna Carta or a thoughtful debate (a-la Federalists vs antiFederalists) taking place in China. It may have happened, but it sure didn't have much staying power.
