Sorry about the hiatus. Last September I had several hundred dollars worth of plumbing fixtures stolen from a locked house. I declared at that moment that I would devote my spare time to getting out of the construction trades in search of a career that isn't experiencing the slide to a Third World lifestyle. I have now begun that quest in earnest and as a result, two jobs have limited my ability to keep this blog up to date.

Things should settle back to a more normal routine after Thursday of next week. Thanks for your patience through my transitional period.

Before I go, I want to give a little coverage to an event which occurred last week.

This illegal killed at least 15 people and raped God-only-knows how many women. He was put to death by lethal injection in Texas. I don't think lethal injection is cruel or unusual enough for this piece of dogsh*t. I guess he gets a pass since he is an illegal from Mexico, that is, not an OTM (other than Mexican). As we know, Mexicans have more rights than other immigrants and native citizens.

If he'd only killed 14 people, illegal Mexican alien Angel Maturino Resendiz would have received only a $50 fine. The rapes are a privilege extended to illegal Mexicans by the Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush Administrations.

Hey! There's a good reason to make illegals actual citizens: law enforcement might actually treat them the way the rest of us are treated.

You open borders folks are welcome to use any ideas I come up with in your letters to editors or on other blogs. This stuff is pure gold!

...the Colorado dailies would have written a nice puff piece about Jesus Alonso Ochoa-Gomez. The self-described "pastor" helped between 15 and 20 people at a "safe house" he rented at 912 Havana St. in Aurora. A Denver church even referred needy people to Ochoa-Gomez. Yes, he is a true man of virtue.

That's what they would have said about him before last week. The story today is that illegal alien Jesus Alonso Ochoa-Gomez kidnapped and held a 20-year-old man against his will, and sexually assaulted him for over 10 days in a Lochbuie trailer he rented with his six-months pregnant wife.

This preventable crime needn't have happened had it not been for the sanctuary policies of cities in Colorado. Illegal alien Ochoa-Gomez could have been stopped at the border, to be certain, but he also could have been deported for any of the other crimes he has committed since 1991, like shoplifting, DUI, fraud, larceny, criminal trespass (not the good kind: border-hopping), disturbing the peace, and assault.

God only knows what is going to happen to Ochoa-Gomez's wife and unborn child, but one thing is certain, all three of them will be citizens of the United States when illegal alien Ochoa-Gomez gets out of jail (assuming he goes). Let me be the first to welcome him as a new citizen. I hope illegal alien Ochoa-Gomez finds a nice home next to an open-border advocate for his "needy" friends and his fighting roosters.

Bush made the announcement just a few hours ago in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bush visited a community center that offers English and other classes along with business startup help. He also announced he was creating a new task force to encourage such efforts around the country and an Office of Citizenship within the Department of Homeland Security to promote the responsibilities and rights of American citizens.

See, ya don't need a Congress to create a task force. Yep, the Office of Citizenship is gonna assimilate all those darned illegals no matter how much it costs or how long it takes. The first things that the Office of Citizenship should tackle are the health issues:

-In the First World, people leave their farm animals outside the human domicile. It was recently discovered that farm animals defecate where they happen to be standing at the time. Discovered even more recently is that feces is dirty.

-In the First World, we have built facilities to handle human waste, even the toilet paper. There is no need to throw used toilet paper in the sink or urinal, or to leave it piled up on the floor beside the WC.

-In the First World, we throw our trash in receptacles designed to hold it. We call these receptacles "trash cans".

I think that if the Office of Citizenship can successfully conquer these three all too common cultural differences, they might be able to tackle something bigger. Maybe they could teach our new citizens that not everybody likes mariachi music, and even fewer like the static-riddled AM versions that are most often preferred by our new countrymen.

The President continues,

"One aspect of making sure we have an immigration system that works, that's orderly and fair, is to actively reach out and help people assimilate into our country," Bush said in a speech at a local community college. "That means to learn the values and history and language of America."

Uuuhhh, yeah, sure. Is not breaking the law one of our values? Many people who have lived here their whole lives don't have a clue about U.S. history, and you think we are going to teach a 35-year-old border-hopper who the hell Myles Standish is? And why would any need to learn the language? There are TV and radio stations, newspapers, and businesses who cater solely to the Latino market. Most government services offer bilingual support. Hell, we have schools that teach brown separatism.

We won't even waste time on the notion that there will be "an immigration system that works, that's orderly and fair,...". I couldn't even type it without laughing.

Bush later gave a demonstration on how to be assimilated,

The president may have undermined that message somewhat while at the Juan Diego Center, as he joined in a class preparing students for their U.S. citizenship tests. Though the instructor addressed students in English, Bush mostly chose their native Spanish to greet and quiz them. When the students couldn't answer his question, how many father-son duos have served as president, Bush explained in Spanish that there have been two, the Bushes and "Juan Adams y su hijo Juan Q."

At least according to the Seattle Public Schools. I read about this on Volokh last week but just didn't have time to post. Checking up on the site today revealed a very good debate (as always) transpired at Volokh over the following days. Be sure to check it out.

The school's website definition of racism overtly declares that only whites are racists,

It's only been 20 years since we ended a 50-year Cold War, where tens of thousands died to protect individualism over collectivism. Now we're told that the ideology that is built on 2,000+ years of the greatest philosophical debates in human history, the ideology that cultivated the best that humankind can offer, the ideology that has liberated more people globally than any other, is nothing more than cultural racism.

Update I: I checked out the Poudre School District. No mention of "cracker-only" racism here. Ditto with St. Vrain Valley School District; but I wonder how much this program costs (look for update).

Update II: I went through St. Vrain's latest amended budget and have determined that only a person whose full-time job is...well, let's just say that it may be impossible to determine how much the immigrant program costs. What I did find out is:

Revenues allocated for the English Language Proficiency Act--$103,000. Last year $82,000 was budgeted, but they spent $108,540 (pg 22). Their Bilingual policy.

St Vrain got Fed money for adult education and the Migrant grant pass through BOCES which totaled $191,000 (pg 22).

Boy! I'd sure hate to think how much the LA School District gets.

From the General Fund, $1,636,973 went to a program (or group of programs) called Integrated Education & English Language Acquisition.

Employee salaries and benefits (total, fy ending June 30, 2006) for Adult Basic Education was $957,190 (pg 32).

Employee salary and benefits for gifted kids? $146,107.

It costs taxpayers over $1,000 more to educate a kid at Central, Columbine, and Mtn. View Elementary schools than most other elementary schools. In the case of Eagle Crest, the school with the most students, the difference is over $2,000 (pg34). I was unable to find the racial makeup of the individual schools, though this page has district-wide info. Any ideas?

The Community Education Fund (pg 58) gets funding from tuition, donations, and "grants". There is no breakdown of the percentages which each contributes, but the CEF has expenditures of $3,100,000.

Is it too soon to request that we consider "separate but equal"?

UpdateIII: These are all 2004 numbers. Links also display test scores (by race) and drop-out rates.

Central School had 373 students, 35% are English as a Second Language, 39% are Free Lunch. Check out their bilingual website.

Columbine had 380 students, 69% are ELL, 75% are Free Lunch

Mountain View had 297 students, 19% are ELL, 36% are Free Lunch

Eagle Crest, the elementary school with the highest enrollment and the lowest cost per student, had 650 students, 11% have English as a Second Language, 9% of the students are Free Lunch.

The Wall Street Journal did a piece on the plight of Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Apparently the European experience with mass immigration isn't working out so hot for Western liberalism,

Many Europeans initially rallied to President George W. Bush's "with-us-or-against-us" approach to combating extremism after the bombings in Madrid in early 2004 and the subsequent murder in Amsterdam of Mr. van Gogh, the filmmaker. Since then, however, this united front has narrowed in many parts of Europe to a populist battle against immigration.

Across Europe, dozens of people are now in hiding or under police protection because of threats from Muslim extremists. Dutch police say politicians reported 121 death threats last year. The number this year will likely be much higher. Geert Wilders, a right-wing member of parliament who also lives in a high-security apartment owned by the state, says he has received 120 menacing emails and letters since January. One of the latest reads: "Oh you cursed infidel! Don't think you are safe from our mighty organization....It is our wish to kill you by decapitation. Your infidel blood will flow freely on cursed Dutch streets!"

Europeans have a shorter memory than even Americans.

Hmmm. I wonder if that is the signal the Senate and the President sent to all of those illegals who protested for rights reserved for U.S. citizens. Hard to believe that some Dutch culture editor of some left-wing rag has bigger gonads that the U.S. president (though Teddy Kennedy is no surprise)...but there it is.

Nope. Things aren't looking good for Europe: European women wearing burka's to avoid being harassed by gangs of Muslim men, Scandinavian teenage girls wearing chastity belts to avoid gang-rape by Muslim men, and the European male will have no problem landing that role for the castrati at the local opera house. When will it end?

It won't, gang-rape, decapitation, and dhimmitude are a small price to pay for cheap immigrant labor.

I got into quite a row over at the Cato blog. The commenter's were quick to try to condemn my arguments, but woefully short on answering my questions:

What is the purpose of our government if not to protect the liberty of the citizens of the U.S.?
If we have no borders, then we have no country. Who protects the liberty of the territorial subjects (since we would no longer be "citizens") ? The U.N.?
The German's have a term, "gesellschaft", which means (roughly) more people=more crime=more laws=bigger government=less liberty. Why would libertarians choose to allow a few individuals to have a little more money if it means the loss of liberty to society as a whole?
There is an inverse relationship between population size and quality of life. Is quality of life important to libertarians?
As long as the U.S. is a Third World-despot safety valve, there is little reason for those regimes to reform and be held accountable by the people who live in those countries. Is holding one's government accountable important to libertarians?

And so on. I probably asked them a dozen more questions in the same vein and got nothing (literally) in return. I really expected a discussion, especially from Cato, but all I got was ... well, nothing. I left the site knowing that:

A) these were questions they'd rather not answer, so they didn't, and

B) these were questions they'd never been asked, and were caught unprepared.

What Price For a Clean Deck?

New City, NY--Mary and Daniel Nagle hired illegal immigrant Douglas Herrera Castellanos, 30, to clean their backyard deck. Upon finishing the job, Castellanos raped, strangled, and then mutilated Mary Nagle's dead body. Afterward he called the Nagles' friends and relatives to brag about his crime.

Armed with a green-handled box cutter, Herrera slashed and beat Nagle almost beyond recognition as he raped her for at least 30 minutes and mutilated her with the box cutter. Part of her earlobe was cut off, and she was cut across her hands while trying to fight off her attacker.

Illegal immigrant Castellanos, a Guatemalan whose visa expired in 2001, was sentenced Monday to life without patrol plus 124 years for the brutal crime.

One That Got Away

As most of you know, I don't watch the news or read most newspapers. So it is understandable when a significant news item slides under my radar screen. It wasn't till I checked my email (which I am loathe to do) that I found out about this story from ABC affiliate 7News in Denver.

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Castle Rock police say a man who kidnapped an 18-year-old girl, holding her hostage for three hours, was in the country illegally and had been deported four times.
Pedro Martinez, 24, is being held on $500,000 bond.

The victim of this preventable crime, Amber Scott, says "the incident has forever changed her outlook on life."

"I appreciate things a lot more, like my family and definitely not materialistic things," Scott said.

Now that may be a good argument for the open-borders crowd: being kidnapped at knife point (what else?) and held hostage by an illegal alien has given her a more positive and spiritual outlook on life. We should all be so lucky.

Of course, now she'll be outlooking over her shoulder anytime she sees someone of Latin American descent.

Did Protests Backfire?

Well they sure didn't help. The Center for Immigration Studies hired Zogby to do a poll on this seemingly contentious issue. Among the conclusions,

On immigration generally, Americans want less, not more, immigration. Only 26 percent said immigrants were assimilating fine and that immigration should continue at current levels, compared to 67 percent who said immigration should be reduced so we can assimilate those already here.

While the Senate is considering various bills that would increase legal immigration from 1 million to 2 million a year, 2 percent of Americans believe current immigration is too low. This was true for virtually every grouping in the survey by ethnicity, income, age, religion, region, party, or ideology.

When offered by itself, there is strong support for the House bill: 69 percent said it was a good or very good idea when told it tries to make illegals go home by fortifying the border, forcing employer verification, and encouraging greater cooperation with local law enforcement while not increasing legal immigration; 27 percent said it was a bad or very bad idea.

Support for the House approach was widespread, with 81 percent of Republicans, 72 percent of independents, 57 percent of Democrats, and 53 percent of Hispanics saying it was good or very good idea.

When offered by itself, there is also some support for the Senate approach, though not as much as for the House bill: 42 percent said the Senate approach was a good or very good idea when told it would allow illegal immigrants to apply for legal status provided they met certain criteria, and it would significantly increase legal immigration and increase enforcement of immigration laws; 50 percent said it was a bad or very bad idea.

There were few groups in which a majority supported the Senate plan, even when presented by itself, exceptions included Hispanics 62 percent of whom said it was a good or very good idea and the most liberal voters (progressives) 54 percent of whom approved of it.

When given three choices (House approach, Senate approach, or mass deportation), the public tends to reject both the Senate plan and a policy of mass deportations in favor of the House bill; 28 percent want the Senate plan, 12 percent want mass deportations; while 56 percent want the House approach.

But when given a choice between just the House and Senate approaches, without the choice of mass deportations, the public prefers the House approach 64 percent version to 30 percent.

One reason the public does not like legalizations is that they are skeptical of need for illegal-immigrant labor. An overwhelming majority of 74 percent said there are plenty of Americans to fill low-wage jobs if employers pay more and treat workers better; just 15 percent said there are not enough Americans for such jobs.

Another reason the public does not like Senate proposals to legalize illegals and double legal immigration is that 73 percent said they had little or no confidence in the ability of the government to screen these additional applicants to weed out terrorists and criminals.

Public also does not buy the argument we have tried and failed to enforce the law: 70 percent felt that past enforcement efforts have been "grossly inadequate," while only 19 percent felt we had made a "real effort" to enforce our laws.

Maybe the open borders crowd should put something in the drinking water that makes citizens take leave of their common sense.

Gosh, Am I Wrong? Could I be so Out of Touch?

As I wrote yesterday, I wasn't surprised to learn that the Border Patrol, at least the "higher-ups" in the Border Patrol, were snitching out the locations of the Minutemen to the Mexican government. When you have internationalists run your federal government, it should be assumed that global priorities will mean more than national ones.

Well, apparently it has turned into a much bigger deal. It's been on the radio all day and it is all over the blogosphere.

Major Dailies Down the Drain

The Outlander has a post on the declining circulation numbers of the major daily newspapers across the nation, and that USA Today enjoys the highest circulation of the lot.

I don't know what is more sad: that the major dailies are politically tone deaf, or that USA Today is the most widely read newspaper.

I have stopped calling the mass media "mainstream" because the mainstream is decidedly to the right of most major news outlets. Though a mass media outlet, I consider FOX mainstream, and I think The Washington Times is more mainstream (though maybe a little right) than the NYT (which is considerably left). For sure there are other factors that contribute to this decline - I went a week w/o internet assess and felt ignorant vis-a-vis current events - but there is still no acknowledgement by these newspapers, like the Denver Post, that there is an obvious Leftist bias in the mass media, and that this bias has alienated the majority of their potential audience.

As for USA Today, this is the fault of the public school bureaucracy and its insane belief that high self-esteem is more important than high educational standards. Equality of outcomes becomes more important than equality of opportunity, and easiest way to achieve that goal is to lower the standards. Once this becomes the "mindset", low standards is all that is expected, or achieved.

Cameras, Cameras Everywhere...

One of the Rights I think people should have in this country is the right to be as anonymous as one wishes. This is the reason I am opposed to a national ID card (as well as a SS card) which some are advocating simply to work, something I consider a human right.

Cameras in public places similarly grate on my nerves. I understand all too well the reasons businesses and government use cameras to monitor their respective properties. It's obvious, too many people have no respect for property. This is the fault of socialists mostly, who have done a magnificent job of convincing people, starting in elementary school, that respect for private property is unreasonable because private property is an outdated "notion", just like the "notions" of the nation-state, popular sovereignty, and patriotism. Of course, this isn't the way it's taught, it's just the practical effect of socialism.

But what happens when cameras become a source of revenue for a government? Well, the government becomes just as dependent on that revenue as any business depends on a source of revenue. The difference of course is that the government is the only institution - versus a business or charity for example - that can legitimately coerce compliance in a free society. Another difference? Bad or unethical businesses and charities can be held accountable. When the government is unethical, a news story may highlight the questionable practice, then it is never discussed again - and nobody is, or can be, held accountable.

This is the case of the "speed and red light cameras" used by governments worldwide. The amount of money generated by these cameras is so high, that government dependency on camera revenue invites and accepts fraud and abuse. According to Radley Balko over at Cato in this article (don't worry, it's short), abuse is rampant. However because of the parasitic nature of government, a little fraud and abuse won't stop them from making a buck.

Governments will continue to install spycams, and you will be assumed guilty when "caught". If you are an illegal it's no big deal, you simply ignore the ticket. But if you are a citizen, you could spend a grand on a lawyer and try to fight the ticket, but most citizens will shrug their shoulders, grit their teeth, and pay.

And the extortion, and the loss of privacy, will continue...

Thus begins The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich A. Hayek. Hayek wrote the warning for a British audience during the early 1940's while Europe was in the throws of war. It is a warning because Hayek knew that there is little difference between fascism and socialism, and the inevitable outcome of either form of governance is tyranny, despite the intentions of those who would call themselves socialists.

Hayek believed that socialists were people of good will, but they had no idea that the necessary means to their ends would be morally repugnant. As Britain started down the road to socialism, Hayek, being a man of compassion, wrote the Road to Serfdom as his way of building a blockade. He warned Britain that "socialism means slavery". Britain chose slavery.

I first read The Road to Serfdom as an impressional young college student. Thank God, huh? With the university jammed full of leftists, one of my first professors was an Austrian economist (this is a field of study, not the professor's nationality). Austrian economics are characterized by free markets and free men. The effect of Hayek's thesis was quite profound. I'd seen the injustice of the welfare state already but Hayek explained why socialism is unjust, why injustice is inevitable under socialism, and why it's natural.

Incidentally, my desire to be left alone was furthered by an opportunity to meet Ron Paul, who in 1988 was running as the Libertarian candidate for the POTUS. I knew then and there that I was a libertarian.

Before I get into a review of The Road to Serfdom, I must take care of some laundry. First of all, the printing I have is the one with the 1976 Preface by Hayek. The link I provided is the 60th Anniversary edition.

Secondly, Hayek was very impressed by the abbreviated version(pdf) put out by Readers Digest; of it he says "that it is done without distortion and better than I could have done...".

Third, Hayek says that the best critique of his book comes from Barbara Wootton's study, Freedom Under Planning . Though Hayek cautions that more than one reviewer expressed that the study substantially confirms Hayek's thesis.

Fourth, from here on out, the word liberal means 19th century liberal, or 20th century libertarian. Socialists in the United States (there is no such thing as a classical liberal in Britain, liberal still means what it always has) used the word to allay the fears of liberals that socialism could lead to tyranny. As a result, liberalism became synonymous with socialism in the U.S.. Many liberals, knowing that socialism means slavery, were thus forced to ally themselves with conservatives as a coalition of reason.

And lastly, because of the nature of the book, and my time constraints, I'll be summarizing a chapter at a time.

Got it? Good. Tomorrow: Chapter I

Chapter I: The Abandoned Road

This chapter could very well have been called The Death of Liberalism. By 1931, in Britain and the United States, Hayek writes "that only those whose memory goes back to the years before the last war [WWI] know what a liberal world has been like".

Boy, no wonder I feel so out of place. I guess I'm a man after my time.

Yes, we not only turned our backs on liberalism, we also discarded centuries of liberal philosophy. In my opinion, 19th century liberalism is the pinnacle of Western thought. It is the ultimate ideal that evolved from the debates, discussions and writings of the greatest minds ever to have called themselves human.

Excuse me for being biased here, but I don't buy into that multicultural pap that all cultures and civilizations are equal. They are not. Western Civilization is clearly superior to every civilization currently and previously.

But it isn't just the 19th century philosophers that have been minimized, "but the basic individualism inherited by us from Erasmus and Montaigne, from Cicero and Tacitus, Pericles and Thucydides...". It is this individualism which made people of all classes "conscious of freedom". Hayek used the word freedom, though he admits that the word tolerant more closely defines 19th century liberalism.

21st century liberals are tolerant of everyone and everything except Western Civilization. God help you if you're a white, Christian, right-leaning male...or a 19th century liberal.

Because of the tenets of individualism, Western society flourished, especially after the Enlightenment. As progress due to the success of liberalism came to be expected, it started being taken for granted. Liberalism came to be "regarded as a negative creed" because particular individuals were "offered" little more than a share of the common progress - "a progress...no longer recognized as the result of the policy of freedom". Slowly but surely attitudes towards society and our approach to societal problems reversed, this led to the “entire abandonment of the individualist tradition which has created Western civilization”.

As the Western ideals of liberalism fell into disfavor from those who benefited most from it, “Germany became the center from which ideas destined to govern the world in the twentieth century spread…”.

Remember, Hayek recognizes that fascism and communism are two sides of the same tyrannical coin.

Hayek finishes Chapter I blazing,

But in spite of the ill-concealed contempt of an ever increasing number of Germans for those “shallow” Western ideals, or perhaps because of it, the people of the West continued to import German ideas and were even induced to believe that their own former convictions had merely been rationalizations of selfish interests, that free trade was a doctrine invented to further British interests, and that the political ideals of England and America were hopelessly outmoded and a thing to be ashamed of.

Hmmm, sounds more like the description of a modern leftist than a Nazi. Are you leftists starting to get it? Don't worry if you are not, there are fifteen more chapters.

Where We Are or, State of the Nation

How Much Worse Can It Get?

The illegal immigrant "rights" movement are not only Communists, but also blatent racists. I've written about this several times before in varying degrees of detail, The Outlander really did his/her homework with this post about La Raza (The Race) and MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan)

Michelle Malkin covers the California Governor's race in 2003 in this column. She writes,

MEChA's symbol is an eagle clutching a dynamite stick and machete-like weapon in its claws; its motto is " Por La Raza todo. Fuera de La Raza nada (For the Race, everything. For those outside the Race, nothing)." The MEChA Constitution calls on members to "promote Chicanismo within the community, politicizing our Raza (race) with an emphasis on indigenous consciousness to continue the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlan." "Aztlan" is the group's term for the vast southwestern U.S. expanse, from parts of Washington and Oregon down to California and Arizona and over to Texas, which MEChA claims to be a mythical homeland and seeks to reconquer for Mexico (reconquista).

MEChA's liberation agenda, outlined in El Plan de Aztlan, states defiantly:

"We do not recognize capricious frontiers on the bronze continent. Brotherhood unites us, and love for our brothers makes us a people whose time has come and who struggles against the foreigner 'gabacho' who exploits our riches and destroys our culture. With our heart in our hands and our hands in the soil, we declare the independence of our mestizo nation. We are a bronze people with a bronze culture."

Substitute "Aryan" for "mestizo" and "white" for "bronze." Not much difference between the nutty philosophy of Bustamante's MEChA and Papa Schwarzenegger's evil Nazi Party. To date, however, the only exposure Bustamante's MEChA history has received has been on the Internet.
In a critical article on Bustamante published by David Horowitz's FrontPage Magazine.com last week, Lowell Ponte notes that "Like Nazism, MEChA has acquired more than a tinge of racism. In their tactics to advance Latinos and 'La Raza,' many of its activists have directed racist attacks against not only white-skinned Anglos but also against blacks, Asian-Americans and Jews -- in fact, against every non-Latino group."

I Raised Money for the Democrats

And I did a good job to boot. The tale of how I could betray what I know is right is long and interesting, but not the subject of this post. An abbreviated version is appropriate however:

I started watching McNeil/Lerher at a very young age, maybe six. By the time I was eleven or so, I realized that the fellow's they had from Cato were always the most reasonable. The free hours of my high school years were spent with girls, keg parties, and the symphonic orchestra. No time for TV or politics.

I went to college after HS as an Economics student. I hated being a business student, and I dropped out after a couple of semesters.

A few months later, some friends approached me and asked if I wanted to go to a Grateful Dead show. That was all she wrote: I put in my two weeks notice at work, removed a sizeable chunk of money from the bank, and hooked up with the tour in Nobelsville, Indiana. It was liberty. It was all I wanted. It was what I did till Jerry Garcia died in 1995.

The week after Jerry died, I enrolled back in school, this time as a political science student. I like politics, especially philosophy, nearly as much as I like the Dead. It was a perfect fit. I was an honor student, and well liked by most of my professors. I knew my sh*t. I was 27.

In the spring of 1996, I was asked to submit an essay on why I should be allowed to go as an intern to the Democrat or Republican conventions, and to pick which one I'd prefer if chosen. Naturally my first choice would have been the Libertarian convention, but that wasn't an option. So I chose the GOP.

I was later told that all three slots were taken for the trip to San Diego, but one professor had pushed for me to go to one of the conventions. He is a really great guy, even though he is a Yellow Dog Democrat. Anyway, I said OK. I'd been to Chicago several times by this point, I always had a great time, and I have several friends there; so I still looked forward to the trip, even though I knew most of the people I'd be surrounded by were loons.

Lots of stuff happened at that convention that will make most readers shake their heads and chuckle: I asked Sam Donaldson and Bob Schaeffer about the Oliver North/Bill Clinton connection...hoo boy! Deer in headlights! That's a story for another day.

The outfit I got assigned to was a group called Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century, or DL21C. My job as volunteer coordinator was to sell tickets to a bash at the Navy Pier. The party was to have Los Lobos, Steven Baldwin, CSN, Al Gore, and a host of other celeb's as guests.

The offices that had been set up for DL21C were in the Merchandise Mart. Getting to them was rather interesting: take the freight elevator to the third floor, then take the middle elevator of the elevator's on the north side of the hallway to the sixth floor, cross the hall to the elevator on the south, and go down to the fifth floor,... Anyway, the office was toward the end of a hallway. At the end of the hall was a room full of desks and telephones, the name on the door said Cook County Department of Education. Next to that office was another that had fold-away tables with telephones. The name on that door said that it was the office of the Chicago teachers union (NEA). I kid you not, I could open all three doors at once.

Ninety percent of the fundraising calls the interns (yes, we were getting graded for our work) made were from the office of the teacher's union. Some of those calls are stories all their own, whew. One day however, I had about ten more volunteers than phones. No problem. The man in charge of DL21C had keys to the DoE office as well.

That's right, about ten interns (I wonder how many had government grants/loans) spent an afternoon on taxpayer-financed telephones and office space raising money for the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign. Hell, it might have even been illegal to use the union office, but hey, DL21C-Chicago had those keys as well.

I don't know how much money was raised. The "cheap seats" were $75 and the balcony seats were $250. There were probably 250-300 "unwashed" (those were the $75 folks. They were referred to as "unwashed" by one of the organizers) , and probably 100 or so of the $250 people.

Al and Tipper showed up (it was the second time that week I was within rock throwing distance of that clown), CSN didn't. I wonder how many purchased tickets just to see CSN? I wonder how many got their money back? Steven Baldwin was there. Man! I hadn't seen someone that drunk since...well, the night before. What a slob. He looked like he'd slept in his clothes, and he smelled of booze and tobacco (you know the smell).

Well, that's the story of how I broke the law to help elect Bill Clinton. On the plus side, I did get an "A".
